If it's being identified in the PC, then you can get it working with a software named Xpadder. Use the older version of XPadder as it is free. If Using Windows7 or Vista, run in Compatibility mode for XP.

Run it. Select an image similar to ur controller (XBOX 360, PS3 or other, there are many choices so dont worry!).

With this software u can map ur keyboard buttons to the controller!

Assign the right stick, left stick, buttons and triggers when asked to proceed.

When u have it done u can map the controller buttons to keys on the keyboard, mouse and even mouse movements!

It's quite simple to use, and quite effective.

I played [PROTOTYPE] and SPLINTER CELL CONVICTION with Xpadder using my PS3 like controller.

So Go for Xpadder (version 3 is free i think, 4 is not)!!

Good Luck!!
References :
Experience

Install Motionjoy. Its free to download and its the best if you play games using any controller. You can change control settings by going to control panel, and then to devices and printers, just right click on your controller and click on configure to change the settings.
References :
It sounds like your controller is not found by your pc you need to add the devide manually by going to control panel add new hardware you may need the driver disk.

Is the controller a USB or D type if its usb then it should be easy to configure via plug and play.

If its a D type then it will need setting up it uses your sound card.

More info needed really.
References :
www.googalit.com

Pretty much, if you can connect your xbox controller to the pc, you can go to the options of the game and change them. (click "move forward" and move the stick forward.)
References :
I don't know Playfirst but Bigfish should be safe as long as you downloaded it legally, but if you got it from a pirated website, then you will have surprises such as Trojan agents, Trojan horses, Spywares, viruses, etc. Firefox may be good, but you will still need a good Firewall such as Zone Alarm (44MB). It will also protect you from hackers, and I advise you Ad-Aware 8.3 (120MB), Spybot Search and Destroy (15MB) and Spyware Blaster (3MB). (Only one Antivirus, keep it updated at least weekly) and as many Antispywares as you want! As long as they don't conflict with your computer...

I have Antivirus Avira which is very strong and stops 96% or 98% of bad threats. http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/download/ca3a3704cd56a07f9dc06f6c139b55c3/
In the meantime, if you see that your smart screen is off, you should not download the game as it could include something fishy!
References :
I have a few BigFish games for myself and my daughter. They didn't cause any harm.

Sites that legally sell games like Bigfish and Playfirst are safe. the freebies are probably demoes.

For other, more legally ambiguous, sites, its a good idea to use Firefox and scan the stuff first.
References :
The developers' console (or dev console) that allows this in Fallout is available in many PC games. Look up GameFAQs or similar and see if there is anything about enabling the console in the cheats section. Most games probably allow you to add achievements, or at least cheat so much that getting them is easy. Obviously only Games for Windows LIVE titles have achievements in the first place.

This method won't work on 360 since you will not be able to access the dev console.

Off the top of my head, Bioshock 2 is a GfWL title that will almost certainly have a dev console on the PC version.
