How do online user names for pc games work?

I’m just starting to get into pc games again after having been on consoles for quite a while. I’m wondering for games like MW2 and Bad Company 2; how does your online user name work? Is it similar to xbox 360/ps3, but through the game developer?

yeah… sorta, you dont really keep your online name for every single one.. most of the time you just chhange your name to whatever, whenever.. hence the names without constant numbers after them
