Why do people think that online and computer games qualify as board games?

Yes, Scrabble and Go and Chess and Risk are all board games. And yes they’re all available online in some shape or form. But for me the definition of a board game is something where you can take it out of the closet, put it on a table, and play face to face with friends. ONLINE games should be in a seperate category! What’s everybody think?

I agree this is a somewhat tough separation. Risk, Sorry, Yahtzee, Scrabble, Go, Chess etc. are all board games that have been made to be played online. They carry the traditional rules and such, but lack the "family, sit around the fire, and drink hot chocolate, while you play a board game" feel. I would guess though that similar guestions would arise about these games whether they were taken out of closet or played on a computer screen. I suppose you have to look at it the same way you would look at how a game may be played differently by different cultures. It doesn’t make the game wrong, just different.
