Does anyone know how to get downloaded games for your pc to run?

I have the dos downloaded version of a nightmare on elm street and everytime i try to get it to play, it says this version of the game does not support full screen or something like that. The same with other pc games i downloaded. Can anyone help me?
try running it in the C Prompt mode.
